Precious Few Things Remembered

One of the real highlights from my days of running an Internet broadcast was finding incredible new music that was getting little or no exposure anywhere but on our little web site. I came across some amazing talent during that time - quite a bit local to Atlanta. Bands like Honestly, Bain Mattox, Outshine, Peter Moon - all amazing talents. In terms of making inroads nationally, probably Honestly and Bain Mattox managed to make it the furthest up the ladder. That in and of itself tells you just how difficult making it in the music business is, because the CD’s released by Honestly and Bain Mattox were as good as anything else we were playing at that time - and better than quite a bit of what was played.

Even still, of all these very talented artists, no group had the impact both on our listeners and me personally as Six Against Seven. Led by Jonathan Shelton, their CD “Precious Few Things” had that something special that made it stand head and shoulders above all the rest. The song “Chance Of Rain” was one of our top requested songs for over a year! The entire CD was littered with music that was far too good to have been shared among so few people. Of all the music I have heard over the past eight years, the CD by Six Against Seven would rank in my personal top twenty.

I never fully understood why Jonathan left the band - which had the sad affect of ending them as a group completely, since it was Jonathan’s rich voice and eerie knack for songwriting that was the driving force behind the group.

I wish I had made the opportunity to see them live, and I would have really liked to have spoken with Jonathan after it all ended to see if he knew how truly special his music made Atlanta Blue Sky Alternative back then.

Fortunately I still have the CD. I’ve toyed with the idea of parting with it - and still may one of these days, as my digital copy of it is what I listen to now. Sadly it’s out of print and impossible to find anymore. Perhaps I’ll put it up for bid one of these days. I just wish I could get it to 100,000 people instead of one.

I have a whole sleeve of cd’s in my closet. I use to play guitar in 6 against seven and still talk to the guys regularly. Shelton left the band for many different reasons but quite honestly the business took his heart out of it and God put it his heart to follow other paths. Maybe one day something will happen with these songs and some others we had written but never recorded like Naming the Disease, L.A.T.E and tear, maybe Shelton will record and release them. Thanks for taking me back…

Michael - maybe one of us should go by “Mike” for the sake of this conversation, lol - I’ll volunteer. Thanks for contacting us, it really is great to know some more of the story. I also got an email from your drummer, Wes, who tells me Jonathan is a new Daddy! Between you and Michael, I really appreciate your offers for a few CDs - I know the handful of folks that still visit here would love a copy - as would I - I sent mine to my Cousin.

I’d love to follow up with all of you guys and do a write up. Maybe we could work that out? Thanks again for the contact!
