Baghead’s Duplassity

Being a huge fan of independent films, it is always exciting to find artists and projects that are making their way in the expansive sea of commercial humdrum. A unique perspective, odd and sometimes downright weird are just some of the elements a true indie fan expects for their entertainment dollar. I am reminded of the first time I viewed the Coen brothers Raising Arizona - Brilliant!
Two indie filmmakers on the rise today, who are also brothers, are New Orleans natives Jay and Mark Duplass. In the mid-90’s, drawing from a passion for filmmaking that dates back to their childhood, the brothers studied film while attending college in Austin, Texas. Starting an editing business and a few not so positive attempts at filmmaking started to pay off. By 2005 with several award winning shorts under their belt, the brothers first feature, The Puffy Chair was nominated for several awards and picked up for theatrical release while being featured at the Sundance Film Festival.
The brothers second feature film, Baghead is slated for release in July. The Story - four struggling Los Angeles actors head to a cabin in the woods to work on a screenplay that can be parlayed into a vehicle for stardom for all involved. The premise of their screenplay comically evolves into a horror film, starring a mysterious villain with a bag over his head. Which makes Baghead a… horror comedy?? (Ok, I’m not quite sure on this, I guess time will tell. ) From what I can tell of the trailer, this is a do not miss, one of a kind charmer.
In case you have missed The Puffy Chair, you can catch it on Netflix’s view instantly. I highly recommend it. Based on my viewing of The Puffy Chair and just the trailer for Baghead, I feel it is safe to recommend it also - catch it when you can.
Keep an eye out for the works of the Duplass brothers. Jay and Mark are considered forerunners in the “mubmblecore” film movement, which is indicative of low budget production, using non-professional actors, improvised scripts and a focus on personal relationships. Under their directorship and some witty, intelligent writing, what you get is incredibly entertaining.

I have to say that the trailer for baghead is excellent, and really makes me want to see this film. The Puffy Chair was very oddball, but really funny, and these two do make you think of the Coen brothers style of film.
